IMPELLER REPLACEMENT – THE BASICS
- Use impellers made of neoprene for the cooling of the engine and for the transfer of fresh water or salt water. The most widely used material is neoprene. It is suitable for applications where there is little oil or diesel in the tank.
- Nitrile impellers are used for bilge pumping and transfer duties when the water is highly contaminated (e.g. oil or diesel).
- Depending on the engine duty, replace all impellers at least once a year, if not sooner. An impeller can endure for several years if installed correctly, but it’s always best to follow a preventative maintenance routine rather than a remedial one.
- Impeller replacement is simple. The impeller can be taken out by unscrewing the end cover screws and then gripping the impeller hub with channel lock pliers or a Impeller Removal Tool. Screwdrivers should not be used since they can be dangerous in small locations and can damage the pump body’s face, leading to leaks.
- Keep extra impellers on board at all times in case of emergencies. The engine cooling system’s impeller is among its most important parts, and it should always be handled as such.
