When two different metals sit in seawater, an electrical current flows between them and the weaker metal starts to corrode. Sacrificial anodes are made from a more active metal, so they wear away first and keep your propeller shaft, propeller, rudder, through-hull fittings, trim tabs and engine cooling parts safe. Without this protection, expensive underwater parts can pit, crack or fail much sooner than expected.
